Thank you for attending Lost and Guided on Monday, May 7. We greatly enjoyed sharing the evening with you all.

The staged reading of Lost and Guided, a play written and directed by Irene Kapustina, moved the audience with its ability to convey the realities of the Syrian refugee experience.

The play was produced by Dr. Conrad Fischer and The Angle Project in August 2017 and originally ran for four consecutive weeks at UNDER St. Marks Theater in New York City. The production returned for Monday’s staged reading performance, which took place at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre.

The production told a riveting and poignant story of four young Syrians whose lives are changed forever after the onset of anti-government protests in Daraa, Syria. The play traces their journeys through the subsequent six years, as they witness and are impacted by their country’s civil war.

90% of the play’s script was transcribed from interviews with Syrian refugees, and it is perhaps this element that helped it relate a universal and emotionally moving story of love, friendship, and the struggle for happiness.

A dinner followed the staged reading. WBEZ’s host Jerome McDonnell hosted a panel and Q&A session with Irene Kapustina, Conrad Fischer, and Hadia Zarzour, co-founder of the Syrian Community Network. Attendees had the opportunity to discuss and explore the production further. The discussion touched upon the conception of the play and the challenges of promoting positive media representation of the Syrian cause.

During the dinner, Dr. Conrad Fischer was presented an award for his support of the production and commitment to raising awareness about the experiences of Syrians.

The Goodman Theatre was also recognized for their generous and moving support of refugees in the Chicago community. The Syrian Community Network is grateful for their commitment to hosting Monday’s event.

We hope Lost and Guided helped shed light on the experiences of Syrian refugees. Proceeds from the event will directly support the Syrian Community Network’s ongoing provision of services to Syrian refugees in the Chicago area.

Lost and Guided had a wonderful turnout and an engaged audience. Thank you again for your attendance and continued support of our organization and of Syrian refugees in your community.
